NL01 – Non-Licensed Asbestos Operative Training

Who Should Attend?

This course is meant for workers who are involved in tasks that might disturb asbestos but don’t require a license to carry out those tasks. People working in the following roles are likely to need this training:

Essentially, if your role involves planning, managing or supervising work such as drilling, cutting, repairing, or removing materials in buildings where asbestos may be present, this training is necessary. You don’t need to be directly handling asbestos every day — what matters is whether your work could involve disturbing it.

If you are involved in planning work, it is essential that you understand:

  • What tasks can be carried out
  • What tasks cannot be carried out under this level of training

There are also tailored versions of this course for more specific roles. For example, groundworkers dealing with buried asbestos, staff working at waste or recycling facilities, or geotechnical engineers involved in contaminated land assessments may benefit from training focused on their area of work. These sessions still cover all required content, while allowing time to address industry-specific risks and procedures.

What the Course Is About

This course has been developed for workers who are likely to disturb asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) during the course of their job, where the work is defined as either non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012). The training content aligns with guidance from UKATA and is based on the principles laid out in HSG210 – Asbestos Essentials.

The course covers the essential information needed for people working in environments where asbestos might be present. While trainers are free to adjust the content to suit the type of work being done, whether that’s construction, maintenance, or installation—the core subjects must be taught in full. This ensures that all learners receive consistent, accurate information about how to work safely with or around asbestos.

Course Requirements

To join this course, each learner must have completed a UKATA-certified Asbestos Awareness course within the last six months. A copy of the certificate must be provided before training begins. If that certificate is out of date, older than six months, the individual will need to take an updated awareness course before moving on to this one.

This requirement makes sure that everyone attending starts with the same baseline understanding of what asbestos is, where it’s found, and why it’s hazardous.

Course Duration and Format

The course takes place over a single day, with a minimum of six hours of total learning time. At least 2.5 hours must be spent on practical training, such as hands-on demonstrations and guided activities using real-life examples. The rest of the session includes theoretical content, group discussion, and time for questions. The day concludes with a short test to confirm that learners have understood the material.

This training isn’t about passing a quick quiz, it’s about making sure people go back to work better prepared to keep themselves and others safe when working around asbestos.
